Summary

Treasure Island is the seminal pirates and buried treasure novel, which is so brilliantly concocted that it appeals to readers both young and old。 The story is told in the first person by young Jim Hawkins, whose mother keeps the Admiral Benbow Inn。 An old seadog, a resident at the inn, hires Jim to keep a watch out for other sailors whom he fears but, despite all precautions, the old man is served with the black spot which means death。 Among the dead man's belongings Jim discovers a map showing the location of the buried treasure of the notorious pirate Captain Flint。 It is not long before he, along with Doctor Livesey and Squire Trelawney, sets sail to find the treasure。 However, amongst the hired hands is the one-legged Long John Silver who has designs on the treasure for himself。 The continuing fascination with this tale of high drama, buried treasure and treachery bears out what Stevenson wrote about the book to his friend W。 E。 Henley: 'if this don't fetch the kids, why, they have gone rotten since my day。' The book not only continues to 'fetch the kids' but the grown-ups too - in fact all those with the spirit of adventure in their hearts。

The quintessential pirate novel and a truly classic adventure story - I'm sure for the majority of people at least 90% of the pirate tropes they know and love originate from 'Treasure Island'。 It was somewhat comforting to read a book where the story is so ingrained in pop culture you find that you already know it。 Although I most certainly had the popular struggle in trying not to mentally cast all the characters as Muppets and/or Tim Curry, and a few struggles with the writing itself based on The quintessential pirate novel and a truly classic adventure story - I'm sure for the majority of people at least 90% of the pirate tropes they know and love originate from 'Treasure Island'。 It was somewhat comforting to read a book where the story is so ingrained in pop culture you find that you already know it。 Although I most certainly had the popular struggle in trying not to mentally cast all the characters as Muppets and/or Tim Curry, and a few struggles with the writing itself based on its age, with a slow middle incredibly bogged down in what I'd inexpertly refer to as 'boat words', the novel's prowess is otherwise pretty undeniable。 Long John Silver is certainly one of the most iconic characters in all of literature。 If you want to read about pirates, read 'Treasure Island'。 If you don't, it doesn't matter too much, you probably know the entire story already whether you like it or not。 。。。more

A wonderful adventure story with the iconic Long John Silver and his parrot Captain Flint。 I like that it is a classic novel that was meant to be fun and entertaining。 You don't need a thick study guide to figure out what is going on。 A wonderful adventure story with the iconic Long John Silver and his parrot Captain Flint。 I like that it is a classic novel that was meant to be fun and entertaining。 You don't need a thick study guide to figure out what is going on。 。。。more

Jim hawkins is the main protagonist of the book and my favorite character of the novel。 I don't usually have a least favorite character, and in this book i did not because i see them from the perspective that the narrative wants i never really grow to hate a person。 Favorite event in the book is in chapter 21 the fight they all get into, without spoilers it is fun to read。 The pace of the novel is definitely fast paced with story going quickly and keeping you entertained。 I would suggest anyone Jim hawkins is the main protagonist of the book and my favorite character of the novel。 I don't usually have a least favorite character, and in this book i did not because i see them from the perspective that the narrative wants i never really grow to hate a person。 Favorite event in the book is in chapter 21 the fight they all get into, without spoilers it is fun to read。 The pace of the novel is definitely fast paced with story going quickly and keeping you entertained。 I would suggest anyone to read this book who likes action and adventure。 。。。more

Fantastic book - one of my childhood favorites! I highly recommend Treasure Island to anyone who loves adventure and a “good yarn,” as some of the characters would say。 It’s a thrilling fight between good and evil with colorful characters you root for。 Everyone, whether hero or villain, feels real and memorable。 Equally enjoyable are the descriptions of the places - I could practically smell the salt water and feel the ship’s deck moving as it sped across the ocean。Dr。 Livesey and Captain Alexan Fantastic book - one of my childhood favorites! A well told story which forms the basis of a plethora of adventure tales and movies。 Although it's a classic, it didn't wow me like some of the others。 So two stars for me。 A well told story which forms the basis of a plethora of adventure tales and movies。 Although it's a classic, it didn't wow me like some of the others。 So two stars for me。 。。。more

(c) Trounin 。。。more

I really wanted to enjoy Treasure Island more than I did, but I just couldn't get my sea legs, as it were。 When charisma was being handed out to characters, Long John Silver got the lot (and "you can lay to that"!) so everyone else feels dull and lifeless in comparison - like cardboard cutouts of a ship's crew。 In fact the only other really interesting character is Billy Bones, (view spoiler)[who doesn't make it past the first few chapters (hide spoiler)], so the level of my attention held varie I really wanted to enjoy Treasure Island more than I did, but I just couldn't get my sea legs, as it were。 When charisma was being handed out to characters, Long John Silver got the lot (and "you can lay to that"!) so everyone else feels dull and lifeless in comparison - like cardboard cutouts of a ship's crew。 In fact the only other really interesting character is Billy Bones, (view spoiler)[who doesn't make it past the first few chapters (hide spoiler)], so the level of my attention held varied a great deal depending on where the POV character, Jim Hawkins' focus was occupied。 As protagonists go, Jim is pretty passive, seeming mostly to reflect at any time the characters in whose society he happens to reside。 For example, a peak in terms of atmosphere is reached as the cabin boy finds himself on board the Hispaniola with only the groggy but dangerous pirate, Israel Hands, for company。 Tension continues to mount as we ask ourselves who has the upper hand? - culminating in a dramatic climax。 This relatively-short section of Robert Louis Stevenson's narrative is as gripping as it gets (and nary a ship's cook in sight!), and yet huge swathes of text dedicated to Jim's interactions with Captain Smollett or Squire Trelawney nigh-on sent me to sleep。 Similarly, the dialogue is delightful whenever a "gentleman of fortune" is speaking, and boring-beyond-belief everywhere else。Let's address the blue, fuzzy elephant in the room here - which is that the Jim Henson adaptation, Muppet Treasure Island is in many ways, much better at telling the story。 It's not just the pitch-perfect casting of Tim Curry as Long John Silver, but the more-nuanced relationship between the pirate and the cabin boy (leading to a much more emotive final scene between the pair), the fleshed-out voyage (including a more satisfying handling of Mr。 Arrow), and of course - the excellent musical numbers! The plain and simple truth is I just didn't enjoy Treasure Island as much sans-muppets! And whilst I absolutely adore The Muppet Christmas Carol, and consider it one of the best adaptations, there are ample reasons to love Charles Dickens' classic festive story without adding a single frog puppet。 A Christmas Carol is, for me, an infinitely-better book。Whilst obviously a hugely-influential novel in terms of modern-day popular culture, responsible for laying the foundations for a whole family of pirate stereotypes much beloved of adults and children alike (though no doubt somewhat damaging from a historical perspective), Treasure Island is sadly not at all a good book in terms of female representation - though given that the original title was The Sea Cook: A Story for Boys I suppose that's hardly surprising。 Another point in favour of the Muppet version - Ben Gunn is gender swapped to great effect!Overall, a suitably-swashbuckling story - though one of variable hold over the attention - with irresistible mannerisms of speech throughout, the main failing of which being the lack of muppets。 。。。more

How I managed to grow up without reading this classic, I'll never know。 I'm glad I have, even at this late date。 So much contemporary fictional pirate culture stems from Treasure Island。 It was a classic boys' adventure series even back in 1883 when it was published。 It has withstood the test of time。 Fun read。 How I managed to grow up without reading this classic, I'll never know。 I'm glad I have, even at this late date。 So much contemporary fictional pirate culture stems from Treasure Island。 It was a classic boys' adventure series even back in 1883 when it was published。 It has withstood the test of time。 Fun read。 。。。more
